I need a drink…

Almost everyone I know has an occasional drink, and typically it’s right after a long day of work or after something stressful has happened. Does this mean they are alcoholics? It might. There are certain signs and symptoms that one can’t ignore though.
Excessive alcohol use is one of the most widespread substance abuse disorders in the U.S., ruining and disturbing family and interpersonal relationships, job performance and quality of life. Physiologically, alcohol depresses the central nervous system, producing inappropriate behavior patterns. We’ve all tried that certain yoga move after a few beers trying to impress our friends only to end up hurting ourselves! You might notice someone you suspect of alcoholism having bad coordination or that their intellectual skills have decreased. Chronic drinking can cause delirium, shaking and heavy sweating just to name a few. Tons of people are admitted to the hospital with alcohol-related conditions, like liver, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular problems.
The stress reduction effects of massage have been used as a valuable part of an overall treatment plan for alcohol rehab. Passive stretching and hot packs can be used in combination also. Always check with the overseeing physician and counsel to insure best drug treatment for the client.
Marijuana, being a psychological dependent drug is a little harder to notice and zero in on among clients. It’s symptoms range from emotions of feeling good to paranoia. I have never had a problem with a high client. I don’t ever remember even noticing a client was high on marijuana… and I’m sure I’ve had a few. I have had clients tell me that they’ve gone to a drug rehab for marijuana dependency and their counselors always suggested massage and bodywork as a great way to relax.
