Association Lawsuits
Filed Under: Massage & Bodywork Associations
With all of the lawsuits between Massage Today and the AMTA, and the people that are questioning the ethics of NCBTMB. It’s really no wonder that some therapists don’t even want to be recognized as part of these associations.
I think it’s a shame that everything we are trying to accomplish is being hindered by these associations. These are the people that we are supposed to be able to go to and count on for positive media exposure and for getting the word out about the positive effects of massage and bodywork. Of course the media only dwells on the bad things that are happening and there is a lot of good that comes from these associations. But to think that they haven’t even been around very long and to be receiving negative exposure all ready is quite unsettling. I work with other therapists that WILL NOT put their name on the AMTA’s list because of the present circumstances.
For me though, I know that I am happy to at least have an association that is doing what they can, by the way of trial and error of course, to help bring higher standards and education. I don’t think we should hold the whole association responsible for the actions of one or two of the board members.

What exactly do you consider “higher standards and education.”?

I live in a state that has absolutely NO requirements to practice MT. These associations are at least trying to head in the direction of making sure that not just any joe-shmo is out there claiming to be an educated MT. So, ANY standards at all are higher standards. I do feel there is a long way to go and we need to keep pushing for education to exceed what it does now.
